A family weekend in East London: things to do with kids
Beaches, parks, rainy-day backups and the odd big animal. A local parent's guide to filling a weekend with children of any age.
East London is one of the easiest cities in the country to entertain children in, mostly because the ocean does half the work for free. But there's more to a family weekend here than the beach — and crucially, there are backups for the days the weather turns, which on this coast it does without much warning. This is a parent's guide to filling a weekend, sunshine or not.
Start with the beaches
The beaches are the headline act, and rightly so. Nahoon Beach is the family default — a long stretch of sand, a tidal area at the river mouth that's gentler than the open sea, and enough space that a busy Saturday never feels packed. Surfers head for the reef; families spread out on the main beach. Pack for a half-day at least, because once children are in the sand they don't leave on schedule.
Gonubie's main beach is the other strong option, with a tidal pool that's a godsend for younger children and nervous parents — calmer water, easier supervision, and a boardwalk for the post-swim walk. If your weekend is about keeping small ones safe and happy, Gonubie earns its drive.
Burn energy at the parks and the front
Beyond the sand, the Esplanade and the various green spaces around the city are made for restless kids. The seafront promenade is good for scooters, bikes and ice cream, and it's flat enough for a pram. A morning at the beach followed by a walk along the front and a treat is the classic East London family rhythm, and it works because it's simple.
The big-animal option
If you want to give the children a day they'll actually remember, the game reserves on the city's doorstep do the trick. Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve, around 30km out towards Chintsa, runs game drives where kids can see the kind of animals they usually only meet in books — and it's close enough to do as a day trip rather than a whole expedition. Book ahead, take hats and water, and manage expectations on nap times.
Rainy-day backups
This is the part visitors forget to plan for. East London weather turns, and a washed-out beach day with bored children is its own kind of emergency. The malls are the reliable wet-weather fallback: Hemingways Mall in Nahoon has the city's biggest concentration of family entertainment, food and indoor space, and Vincent Park is the smaller, more manageable alternative. A rainy morning at the mall — a film, a meal, a wander — keeps the day from collapsing.
It's worth having one indoor plan in your back pocket before the weekend even starts, so the first grey cloud doesn't trigger a scramble.
Eating with kids in tow
Family-friendly is East London's default setting, so you're rarely stuck. Buccaneers at Nahoon Beach is loud, casual and forgiving of a table of children, with the ocean to distract them between courses. The mall restaurants are reliably geared up for families. The general rule: lunch out, somewhere relaxed, somewhere near where you already are. Don't drive a hungry, sandy child across town for a "better" restaurant — proximity beats prestige with kids.
A sensible weekend shape
If you want a template: Saturday morning at the beach (Nahoon or Gonubie), lunch nearby, a quiet afternoon, then an early dinner. Sunday a game drive or a park, depending on energy and weather, with the mall as the all-weather insurance policy. Build in more downtime than you think you need — the point of a family weekend is that nobody, including the parents, comes home more tired than they left.
Where to start
